Bruiser’s delivery was planned a lot more and we were ready for it. We had everything set up for caring for Princess and Buddy. Early in the morning we left for the hospital. We checked in, got set up and waited just a short time. We were scheduled for surgery at 7:30am. What was different this time was the spinal block versus the epidural. It was really weird not having any feeling over most of my body. Once they got me settled in the OR, Daddy came in and they got started. After the procedure had started there seemed to be a pause and some low discussion. I didn’t know what it was about until a little later. Because we didn’t know if he was a boy or girl, there was some extra excitement. As with the rest of my kids, he came out wrapped up in his cord. One nurse even commented before he was completely out that it must be a girl because the baby was wearing “jewelry,” meaning the cord. It didn’t matter, either way we were happy and had names for both. It was neat to hear, “It’s a boy!” They got him out and Daddy was the first to see him. He was our biggest baby at 9lbs 11oz but not the longest, that goes to Buddy. Daddy took a picture of him to show me and then they both went into the Nursery to get him tested and wrapped up. I got to see him within a half hour of getting out of the OR. I held him a little but still didn’t have all the feeling in my arms, so Daddy gave him a bottle. Let me tell you, the weirdest feeling was periodically trying to wiggle my toes and having nothing happen because the spinal block hadn’t worn off yet. The kids were able to come see us that afternoon. Daddy spent the night at the hospital and the kids had fun with Grammy and an Auntie. The nicest thing was having my netbook. We set up the webcams before we left, so Daddy went home for the next couple of days to care for the older kids and we all checked in throughout the day. We had visitors and quiet time. I even went home a day early because I was doing so well.
I almost forgot, the discussion after the surgery started was the doctors trying to figure our how they could see baby in the womb so clearly. Apparently, it is rare, but happens and my doctor suggested we think hard about having another one because the risk would be higher. So, we decided Bruiser was it! He is and forever will be our baby! So this birthday is bittersweet for Mommy. Life would definitely not be complete without him. I love you Bruiser!
